Sesquicentenary of Colombo Municipal Council

The Philatelic Bureau of the Sri Lanka Posts will issue a new postage stamp in the denomination of Rs. 10.00 on 14th December, 2015 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Colombo Municipal Council.

Colombo has been made use of as a location of ferry for naval activities during the period of Portuguese, Dutch and British. Over a period of time, while Colombo was considered as the main capital city of the Country, in the present, Colombo is recognized as the main administrative and commercial capital of the Country. The Colombo Municipal Council, which was established during the period of British Rule in 1865 for the purpose of the administration of the city, is the oldest and the largest Local Government Institution of the Country. Colombo Municipal Council, which inherits a renowned history of 150 years, is the oldest ever Local Government Institution in South Asia.

The administrative area of Colombo Municipal Council, the extent of which is 37 square kilometers, is consisting of 47 Municipal Wards. The administration of the Colombo Municipal Council has been divided into six (06) administrative districts. It is the His Worship the Mayor who is the first citizen of the city of Colombo as well as the Head of the Council which comprises 53 Members of Municipal Council who were elected from various political parties representing 47 Municipal Wards. In addition to this, a Deputy Mayor also represents the Council. While the late Hon'ble R. Sarawanamuttu was elected as the first Mayor in 1937, from then onwards, 24 Mayors have been succeeded him. At the time of the Sesquicentenary being celebrated, Hon'ble A.J.M. Muzammil is functioning as His Worship the Mayor.

While the permanent population of the city of Colombo is approximately 07 Lakhs, they belong to various Communities such as Sinhala, Tamil, Muslim, Malay, Burgher and so on who are living in harmony with each other within a multireligious and multicultural environment. At the same time, a large number of people amounting to around 05 Lakhs frequent the city of Colombo for various day – to – day activities from various parts of the Country. It is the responsibility of the Colombo Municipal Council to fulfil the requirements of all these people

The such requirements as Health, Education, Welfare activities, Water Supply & Drainage, Disposal of Solid Waste Matter, Engineering activities such as maintaining traffic signals and so on are being maintained and fulfilled by a large number of Departments belonging to Colombo Municipal Council.

On the occasion of the Commemoration of the 150th Anniversary of the Colombo Municipal Council, while the Colombo Municipal Council is going through a rapid development process in various fields leading to a transformation with a more streamlined future vision, to realize these objectives, various cultural and sports centers, tourist hotels, wide road networks and beautiful gardens and so on are proposed to be constructed and prepared. Also the attention of the World Community may be attracted to the proposed Port City Project which will be instrumental in attracting the attention towards the City of Colombo.

It is an exceptional occurrence for the Colombo Municipal Council to enjoy the international recognition as a city which achieved a rapid development of the city of Colombo in the year of 2015 on the occasion of the Sesquicentenary of Colombo Municipal Council which the citizens of the city of Colombo in particular and generally the whole of the Country can be proud of.
