International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking

As per the resolution passed in the General Assembly of the United Nations held on December 7, 1987, June 26 was declared as the International Day against Drug against Drug Abuse. Its main objective is to strengthen international co-operation for working towards the realization of the target of freeing the international society from the drug menace.

The issue of global drug menace has been a severe threat both to the protection and sovereignty of nations as well as the public health and the well-being of humanity. Besides, it has also dealt a severe blow on the socio-economic and political stability and the sustainable development of countries.

It is the National Dangerous Drugs Control Board which is in the forefront in the task of winning the challenge of realizing the expected goal of building a country "free from drugs and full of energy" in collaboration with state and non-state officials and the entire people of Sri Lanka following the concept of "a country free of drugs" of His Excellency the President with the object of freeing the people o Sri Lanka from the menace of drugs.

The National Dangerous Drugs Control Board performs the unique task of planning ad implementing the National Policy on Drugs, preventing the addiction to drugs through its Divisions of Drug Prevention, Treatment and Rehabilitation, Research, Laboratory and Outreach Services and through the activities such as maintaining data bases, freeing individuals from the habit of drug abuse and integrating them in society etc. It is also the apex state institution which functions to minimize the abuse of toxic drugs such as heroine, cannabis, narcotic drugs, medicines etc.
