For half a century the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has been instrumental in shaping the demographic landscape of Sri Lanka through a series of pivotal and targeted interventions.
From pioneering endeavors such as the inaugural Fertility Survey in 1973 to the establishment of Population Studies at the University of Colombo in 1976, UNFPA has remained at the forefront of catalyzing progress.
Noteworthy milestones include the drafting of the Colombo Declaration on Population and Development in 1979, the ratification of CEDAW in 1981, and the poignant recognition of the first AIDS Day in Sri Lanka in 1988.
Through initiatives like the Well Women Clinics established in 1996 to the innovative MithuruPiyasa Gender Based Violence Survivors Help Center established in 2007, UNFPA has consistently championed the causes of gender equality, choice, dignity, and women's empowerment.
As the 10th Country Programme unfolds in this 50th year of operations, UNFPA reaffirms its commitment to fostering gender equality and societal advancement. With a strategic focus on policy advocacy, service enhancement, and normative change, UNFPA continues to pave the way for a more inclusive and equitable Sri Lanka.
