Guglielmo Marconi, born in 1874 in Bologna, Italy, was a pioneer in telecommunications and a prominent innovator in radio technology. Through his passion for electrical engineering, he developed the first wireless telegraphic system, demonstrating the transmission of radio signals over long distances.
His discoveries were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1909.
His work not only revolutionized telecommunications but also inspired generations of inventors and innovators, Marconi helped bridge the gap between people, allowing them to communicate instantaneously and without geographical boundaries. His scientific legacy lives after him and has allowed the entire world to progress towards easier and faster communication systems that has eventually led to the globalized communication system that we know it today.
The ceremony marks also an occasion to celebrate the strong bond and longstanding friendship existing between Italy and Sri Lanka, a Country that Marconi visited in the 1930s.
