The Philatelic Bureau of the Department Posts has issued a new postage in the denomination of Rs. 45.00 on September 16, 2019, depicting the Colombo Lotus Tower.
Moratuwa University provided the main consultancy services and it is owned by the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL). The Tower, situated at the D. R. Wijewardana Mawatha, Colombo 10, also acts as a telecommunications tower. The digital antenna covers a distance of 60 km to the north, 60 km to the South and 50 km to the East and 15 km to the West. This will provide transmission facilities to 20 television stations and 50 FM channels.
The tower allows the efficient use of radio frequency, which is a limited and invaluable resource.
The building is designed like a Lotus flower. The lotus symbolizes purity as well as the country's flourishing development. The structure comprises of three main elements
The Tower Base is circular in shape and this is called the Lotus Thorne. This section comprises of four floors
Entrance gates, shopping complex, the telecommunications museum, convention Hall, art gallery, exhibition centre, area dedicated for VIPs, administration offices and the kitchen is located in this area.
This is a section of the tower which is between the 35netre and 215 mark. This section is cylindrical in shape. Fuce high speed elevators can take visitors up and down rapidly. The elevators that are dedicated to transporting goods travel at a speed of five metres per second. The elevators that are dedicated to transporting passengers travel at a speed of seven metres per second. The passenger elevators can accommodate 25 persons and there are two staircases that can be used in the case of a fire in the building.
This is the section that is above 215 metres from the ground. This section spans 38 metres and comprises of eight floors. 1st floor - Radio transmission control unit 2nd floor - Television transmission control unit 3rd floor - Banquet/conference hall 4th floor - Banquet/conference hall 5th floor - Revolving restaurant 6th floor - Luxury suites to accommodate state guests and other VIPs. 7th floor - An observation gallery 8th floor - AC outdoor plant room and the elevator plant room
