World Post Day 2019

The Philatelic Bureau of the Department of Posts has Issued a new postage stamp in the denomination of Rs 15.00 on October 09, 2019 to mark the World Post Day 2019

Postal services have helped change how people communicate with one another in drastic ways. However, before the days of the internet, people would have a really hard time getting letters and packages to one another due to international policies regarding mail. Playing its part in this global effort, the Post today has a more relevant role than ever by providing infrastructure for development.

World Post Day is here to remind people of how postal services became easier for everyone when countries all over the world finally came to an agreement that would change everything about how mail is processed. World Post Day is celebrated each year on 9 October, the anniversary of the establishment of the Universal Postal Union in 1874 in Bern, Switzerland. It was declared World Post Day by the UPU Congress held in Tokyo, Japan in 1969. Since then, countries across the world participate annually in the celebrations. The Posts in many countries use the event to introduce or promote new postal products and services.

Celebrating the anniversary of the Universal Postal Union, World Post Day aims at educating people about how postal offices around the world have helped further global communications and make everyone more connected with one another. At the Universal Postal Union, they work towards their initiatives to make mail a better experience for everyone, including discussions about economic sustainability and environmental protection.

In line with the World Post Day celebrations, the UPU in cooperation with UNESCO has, for over 45 years, organized an International Letter-writing Competition for young people aged up to 15, each year with different theme to make young people aware of this UN Specialized agency’s work towards a better world to live with.
